Using AI responsibly

Why do new technologies require ethical consideration?

Choices must be guided by accountability

We need to move ethics from a search to find a morally permissible way to do something we have already decided we want to do with technology to something that guides what we conceive as worth doing with technology in the first place.

Intensive development, intensive discourse

The introduction of new technology has always brought some moral and ethical considerations. At the very least, the question has often arisen as to what jobs will be taken over by the new methods and how the change will affect people working in different sectors.

Still, the discourse on AI ethics and related research has been exceptionally intensive over the past decade. The fundamental reasons for this are both the speed of development and its difficult-to-anticipate consequences.

As with any new and rapidly evolving technology, a steep learning curve means that mistakes and miscalculations will be made and that both unanticipated and harmful impacts will inevitably occur. AI is no exception.
