Background information
If you wish to adopt a child alone or together with your spouse, you must first seek adoption counselling. You must also seek adoption counselling if you are considering putting your own child up for adoption.
The purpose of adoption is to promote the child’s best interests.
Adoption counselling advises and assists applicants in assessing their capabilities for becoming adopted parents and preparing for parenthood. The purpose of the counselling is to establish whether the preconditions for adopting a child are met and if it is possible to agree on contacts between the child and their prior parents. In adoption counselling, applicants are directed to apply for an adoption permit and, if necessary, international adoption services. Those considering putting their own child up for adoption are provided support in considering adoption and information on different options.
The counsellors’ tasks also include placing children in adoptive families. The child’s adjustment to their new family is supported and monitored. Adoption counselling can be provided by wellbeing services counties, the City of Helsinki, and licensed organisations.
