To whom and on what terms

Private building owners, organizations that promote the maintenance of built heritage, companies, municipalities, and joint municipal authorities can apply for the grant.

Eligible sites

Grants are awarded for repairs that preserve the cultural and historical values of the site. The grant is discretionary and is always based on a case-by-case assessment.

Suitable sites include, for example:

  • Protected buildings, particularly those protected by zoning regulations.
  • Sites that are part of nationally or regionally significant built cultural environments or valuable landscape areas and support the distinctive characteristics of the area.
  • Other culturally or locally significant heritage sites.

If a building is protected by a separate decision or requires specialized restoration or conservation skills, for example in interior spaces, the grant should primarily be applied for from the Finnish Heritage Agency (Museovirasto).

Eligible measures

Grants can be awarded for repairs that help preserve the building, such as:

  • Repairs to roofs, external walls, foundations, windows, doors, and fireplaces.
  • Renovation of other buildings in the yard or the immediate surroundings.
  • Conservation-oriented renovation planning.

Conditions for granting the support

  • The repair must preserve the character of the building and area as well as its historical features.
  • Unnecessary replacement of building parts must be avoided, and changes should be kept to a minimum.
  • The use of the building must be compatible with its historical character.
  • Work must be carried out using traditional construction methods and materials appropriate to the building’s original period. Material imitations are not accepted.
  • The grant must be applied for before starting the work. A project is considered to have started when a contract or order is made, a delivery is received, or payment for a purchase is made.

The grant decision specifies the purpose and conditions of the support. Only costs that comply with the decision and its conditions are eligible for reimbursement.
