Public guardianship

If you or your family member need guardianship services, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) will provide guidance on the procedures for applying for a guardian. If a public guardian has already been appointed to manage your affairs, contact the guardianship office and the public guardian and/or the public guardianship secretary. Arranging guardianship services means ensuring that guardianship services, as referred to in the Guardianship Services Act, are sufficiently available regionally. The services of a public guardian are necessary if there is no private guardian available (e.g. a relative or a close one) and the person has not, with a continuing power of attorney, determined who will manage their affairs when their functional capacity has decreased so that assistance is needed. The guardian has the right to receive compensation for the necessary expenses from the client's funds, as well as a reasonable fee, considering the quality and extent of his or her duties and the client's funds. The amount of the fee is laid down by government decree. The fee charged by a public guardian belongs to his or her employer, i.e. the state or other an external service provider.
