Background information
Medical rehabilitation is organised by health and social services centres and hospitals. Medical rehabilitation includes rehabilitation counselling and guidance, functional capacity and work ability assessments , rehabilitation need assessments, rehabilitation examinations, treatments that improve work ability or functional capacity, assistive devices, adaptation training and rehabilitative periods in institutional or outpatient care. Medical rehabilitation can be provided to, for example, people with musculoskeletal disorders, mental health patients, and disabled people. The purpose of rehabilitation is to improve the rehabilitee’s wellbeing, functional capacity and coping at work and/or with life in general.
Rehabilitation is available to patients in health and social services centres, hospitals and occupational health care. The need for rehabilitation must be determined by a doctor.
In addition to wellbeing services counties, rehabilitation is organised by Kela, insurance companies, occupational health care providers, associations, and private service providers. Customer fees may be charged for the rehabilitation services. Kela may reimburse some of the costs of the rehabilitation if it has been prescribed by a doctor and purchased from a private service provider. Insurance companies reimburse their customers for the costs of their medical rehabilitation.
