Prepare for the ACME Reform in Suomi.fi Data Exchange Layer
Published 2/12/2025
In early 2026, the Suomi.fi Data Exchange Layer will introduce the ACME feature (Automated Certificate Management Environment). With ACME, authentication and signing certificates for Security Servers can be renewed automatically via the server’s user interface.
Why is this change happening?
Certificate validity periods will shorten starting March 2026—first to six months and later even further. ACME reduces manual work and safeguards service continuity by automating certificate renewal.
What should organisations do?
- Update your Security Server to at least X-Road version 7.5.1 by the end of 2025.
- Review the instructions published in early 2026 on creating an ACME account and configuring the Security Server.
- Prepare to request new certificates yourself via DVV’s e-services in the future.
Timeline
- Now: DVV is testing the ACME feature
- Year-end: Pilot with a partner
- Early 2026: Instructions published on the Service Developers site, info session and support clinics
- 2026: ACME available in all Suomi.fi Data Exchange Layer environments
Once in production, current Suomi.fi Data Exchange Layer users can adopt ACME when renewing certificates—at the latest two months before their current certificates expire. New organizations can enable ACME when joining the Suomi.fi Data Exchange Layer.
ACME Features by Version
Note: Automatic activation of certificates obtained via ACME is only possible starting from X-Road version 7.7.0.
- X-Road 7.5.0: Certificate retrieval via ACME
- X-Road 7.6.0: Automatic certificate renewal + email notifications
- X-Road 7.7.0: Full automation (automatic activation)
