To whom and on what terms
Restrictions on the content of the special registration plate
- Special registration plates for passenger cars must have two to three letters and a number up to three digits long.
- Special registration plates for motorcycles and mopeds must have either two or three letters and a number up to three digits long, or vice versa.
- The letter combination CD is reserved for diplomatic vehicles only.
- Zero cannot be the first or only digit in the plate’s number sequence.
- The use of the letters W and Q is subject to restrictions for registration numbers of mopeds and snowmobiles.
Special registration plates with a black background can be issued for
- Historic vehicles
- Vehicles which, according to register data, have previously had such plates
- Vehicles put into service abroad introduced in 1971 or earlier
- Vehicles or trailers put into service in Finland introduced in 1972 or earlier
- Motorcycles put into service in Finland introduced in 1973 or earlier.
Small registration plates with a white background can be issued for
- Vehicles currently equipped with small plates with a white background
- Vehicles with not enough room for another type of plate (an inspector has confirmed the vehicle cannot accommodate a long registration plate).
