Resign from a religious community via e-services

  1. Identify yourself on the Suomi.fi Personal Data page.
  2. Select the "Membership in a religious community".
  3. Send a resignation request.

To log in to the service, you need online banking IDs, mobile certificate or identity card, and a card reader on your computer.

Please note that the electronic service is linked to the individual personal identity code. For example, you cannot report your dependant's resignation from a religious community at Suomi.fi. Notifications concerning under-age children must usually be submitted using a printable resignation notification form.

Using the Resign from Religious Community form

You can send the resignation request in writing to the religious community from which you are resigning or use the form to inform the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. Submit the notification using the Notification of Resignation from a Religious Community form.

To whom and on what terms

  • Persons who have reached the age of 18 decide on their religious affiliation independently.
  • The religious affiliation of a child who has reached the age of 12 can be changed only with the child’s consent.
  • A child who has reached the age of 15 can, with written consent from the guardians, independently resign from a religious community.
  • The child’s religious affiliation is not automatically determined by the guardians’ religious affiliation. Instead, a child’s resignation from a religious community is always based on the guardians’ separate declaration of their will.
