Background information

Pupils in basic education can apply for a place in instruction with a certain emphasis. The local offer of instruction depends on how comprehensive schools emphasise certain subjects in their instruction following decisions made by the municipality or other education provider. Instruction with a certain emphasis may include languages, natural sciences, music, visual arts or physical education.

Pupils may apply for a place in instruction with a certain emphasis that starts either in grade 3 or grade 7 of basic education. Emphasised language studies can already start in grade 1. Instruction with a certain emphasis extends the pupil’s school week by 1 to 2 hours.
