Map data format and quality

The format and quality of information matters

  1. What format is the data in? Is it machine-readable and structured?
  2. How high-quality is the data? How well does information describe reality?

Find out if the information is machine-readable and structured

For it to be possible to utilise the same data between different information systems, the data must be

  • available in digital format
  • structured, i.e. machine-readable.

Information becomes structured when a structure is defined using metadata. The structure of the data is described using a data model in which the significance and relationship of the different records in the dataset are described.

Map data quality

The quality of the data contained in the dataset may affect its usability elsewhere. Data quality can be perceived from three different perspectives:

  1. How well does the data describe reality?
  2. How has the data been described?
  3. How can the data be used?
