Your organisation can use several different APIs to use Suomi.fi Messages.
As a rule, we recommend that your organisation use the Suomi.fi Messages REST API. In addition, you can use the POST API to for forwarding forms filled in by end-users in your e-service to Suomi.fi Messages. The other APIs are in maintenance mode, and their use is no longer recommended as a rule. These include WS, SFTP and SMTP.
If your organisation uses the REST or POST APIs, you can connect to Suomi.fi Messages via a direct connection. When using other APIs, your organisation must connect through Government ICT Centre Valtori’s Shared Integration Platform (VIA).
You can read general information on APIs on this page and in more detail on the individual sub-pages for each API. In addition, you can compare APIs using the API property list.
REST is the newest and most versatile Suomi.fi Messages API. All features described in the Functionalities section are available in the REST API.
Communication in the REST API is based on one-way integration, in which your organisation’s system calls Suomi.fi Messages regardless of the functionality used.
The POST API allows the transmission and storage of the information on forms that end-users have filled in your e-service in Suomi.fi Messages.
The POST API is only used to transfer form data from your e-service to Suomi.fi Messages. Data transfer is based on POST calls. In order to receive the content of the form from Suomi.fi Messages, your organisation must also introduce another API in addition to the POST API that supports the ability to respond.
Read more about this API on the POST API page. You can also read more about the receiving forms functionality on the Receiving messages page.
In addition to the main APIs listed above, it is possible to use Suomi.fi Messages with the older APIs for the service (WS, SFTP and SMTP). Please note, however, that these APIs are in maintenance mode, and no new functionalities are produced for them as a rule. All old APIs will be closed on 1 January 2027. This means that all services using Suomi.fi Messages must switch to the new REST interface before 2027.
Read more about these APIs in the Old APIs section.
