Naming the host server and the security server

The name selected for the host server becomes the name of the security server (FQDN). The host server must be named correctly so that the application for use permit can be approved and certificate application is successful. In this article is described how to name the host server.

Name the host server as follows:

  • Include the name or official abbreviation of the organisation in the name
  • Use only lowercase letters.
  • Do not use Nordic special characters or diacritical characters in the name (for example: ü, è, ê, à)
  • Allowed special characters: dash (hyphen) (-), underscore (_), and full stop (.). See the NIIS list of prohibited charactersOpens in a new window..
  • The maximum length of the name is 255 characters.

Note that the security server's FQDN can be found in a public name service (e.g. whois-service) and your organisation owns the domain name.

Before the installation the following information must be available, information in pranthesis are example values:

  • Member class of the security server's owner: (GOV)
  • Member name of the security server's owner: (organisation)
  • Member code (business ID) of the security server's owner: (0123456-7)
  • Name of the security server: organisationlp01

Tips for naming the security server

Many organisations name their security servers with an abbreviation "lp" followed by a running number. New security servers can be named by simply changing the number, for example organisationlp01, organisationlp02, organisationlp03.

You can also add test or prod to the name depending on the environment you are installing the server for.

Example of naming the security server for the test environment:

  • Security server's FQDN: organisationlptest.01.org.fi

Example of naming the security server for the production environment:

  • Security server's FQDN: organisationlpprod.01.org.fi

Important to note

Please take following information into account when installing the security server:

Server PIN:

  • A string of at least 10 characters, which must contain characters from at least three of the following categories: lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Save the PIN number - if the PIN is lost, the installation of the connection server must be done again so that the PIN can be changed.

If NAT is used:

1. Security server's private IP

  • IP must be static
  • if DHCP is used the security server must always get the same private IP-address

2. Security server's public IP

  • the address must be static
